Locks for Cancer supports a cause very close to my heart. We are all affected by cancer in one way or another; it is one of the most common diseases in society today. Personally, I have lost three of my grandparents as a result of cancer. One of the drastic effects that many patients face is hair loss as a result of chemotherapy. I have personally seen the effects that people face due to hair loss such as a lack of confidence and low self-esteem and even an overall lost sense of hope. By donating your hair, you can revive hope and confidence back in patients! During last year’s event, seeing so many people willing to donate their hair was inspiring and the overall vibe of the event was super positive and uplifting. Every member of the community that came displayed their support towards the cause and helped make a difference in their own way, whether it be through hair donation, monetary donations, or even just coming to the event to cheer friends and other hair donors. Lastly, I just want to say that our hair can always grow back, but donating it gives us the perfect opportunity to bring a smile onto the face of someone who may be battling one of the hardest times of their life.

I’d always wanted to donate my hair and when locks for cancer gave me the opportunity to cross something off my bucket list as well as join the movement to eradicate cancer I was excited and immediately intrigued. After attending a locks for cancer event as a participant, I not only understood the impact of this minor sacrifice but I witnessed first hand the joy donation brought to observers and donors as well. Knowing I can now make a direct difference and be involved in my community in a way in which I can contribute my personal experience is not only collectively productive but personally rewarding. I hope to bring awareness of the positive impact of Locks for Cancer through my photography and participation! See you there!

Living in a country as developed as Canada, we often forget the immense privilege we are offered through the access to high quality education, healthcare, and resources. For me personally, growing up in such a diverse and infinitely opportune community, I have experienced a great deal of personal growth and success that would not be possible without the support present all around. Now, on the brink of entering adult life, I feel it is my moral duty to give back to the community what it, in turn, has given to me in the past 17 years. Joining a fresh initiative such as Locks for Cancer is one of the first steps I can take in the long journey of leaving the world a better place than it was before. The devastating impact of cancer is one that cannot be understated or ignored; this is what makes the enduring search for a cure so crucial. If I can be a small fraction of a bigger whole that can influence our fight against cancer, then I will not hesitant to volunteer for the cause -- A cause which is unfortunately personal to me, but also personal to every everyone human on the planet.

Personally, I’ve seen many people around me who have been affected by cancer and I’ve always felt like I wasn’t able to do anything about it. But through this organization, I feel like I can help those in need. My grandaunt is a lively humorous person who was always there to lend a helping hand; however recently, she was diagnosed with multiple cancers that now affect her on a daily basis. At one point, it was enough to break her spirit and make her feel helpless. I felt this obligation to return all the favors that my grandaunt has done for the world around her. To me, Locks for Cancer is more than donating hair to those who suffer from hair loss due to chemotherapy; this organization gives hope and encouragement to cancer patients by showing that people are supporting them in many ways and helping them fit in.
