2018 hair donation event
The Beginning...
A lot of planning and action needed to take place in order to make the event a reality. Creating a brand new event was not simple, but thankfully we had the help of Nirmala Jadoonanan from Amaya Entertainment. It is no doubt that without Nirmala's guidance we would not have been able to deliver such a memorable event to support those who have been affected by cancer.
We would also like to thank the Canadian Cancer Society for their support in helping us achieve our goals. We would also like to thank our sponsors for making this event possible, especially Donato Hair Salon and their hairdressers who volunteered their time and resources on this day.
The Event...
The event took place from 1-4pm on June 3rd, 2018 at the Mississauga Celebration Square Amphitheatre and it was a day filled with pictures, laughs and some tears. It started with our introductions and a speech from a Canadian Cancer Society representative, Jillian Sheffield. From there the hair cutting process began and people were eligible to enter a raffle during the whole event. Prizes included a KitchenAid hand blender, a pocket size portable charger, a Fitbit Flex 2 and a pair of Beats EP by Dr. Dre.
Following each group of hair donations, there were performances and/or speeches. Musical performances included those by the St. Cecilia's Youth Orchestra, Trinity Lougheed and Alexi Couto. Speeches were delivered by motivational speaker Jam Gamble and cancer survivor Ruth Lavery, who shared her touching story of hair loss as a result of treatment.
After all the performances and haircuts were completed, the event concluded with the final haircut of the Locks for Cancer founders: Ruchira Gupta, Christina Mac and Maria Xiao.
The Outcome...
After all the planning and time invested towards this event, we're extremely proud to announce that we received a total of 33 hair donations and raised approximately $3,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society!
Most importantly, we want to thank the community and everyone who supported us along the way and during the event. The support and reaction of the community has truly touched us and motivated us to continue making a difference in raising awareness.
Thank you so much to everyone and we can’t wait for this year’s events!
