Although I do not personally know anyone battling cancer, I have had a co-op placement in a hospital in-patient department where I worked with and around patients and families with a variety of severe illnesses. From this experience, I have developed a strong compassion for helping others. Additionally, the idea of fighting cancer was a very abstract concept: cancer seemed like a giant darkness people were trying to defeat. I frequently felt that there was nothing I could personally do to help in an impactful way. However, joining Locks for Cancer helped me to realize it is within our power to have a direct impact on the lives of others. Join us in supporting Locks for Cancer, and support people in need.

As the third leading cause of death worldwide, approximately 39% of people will be directly affected by cancer in their lifetime. Although I do not personally know anyone who suffers from cancer, I understand the catastrophic effects that cancer has on the person afflicted, as well as their family and loved ones. With cancer having such a high incidence, it is not unrealistic to say that in the future, someone I know will develop cancer. I have always wanted to support the fight against cancer, and Locks for Cancer gave me the opportunity to do so. Joining the Locks for Cancer team showed me that I could personally impact and assist people suffering from cancer.

Personally, I’ve seen many people around me who have been affected by cancer and I’ve always felt like I wasn’t able to do anything about it. But through this organization, I feel like I can help those in need. My grandaunt is a lively humorous person who was always there to lend a helping hand; however recently, she was diagnosed with multiple cancers that now affect her on a daily basis. At one point, it was enough to break her spirit and make her feel helpless. I felt this obligation to return all the favors that my grandaunt has done for the world around her. To me, Locks for Cancer is more than donating hair to those who suffer from hair loss due to chemotherapy; this organization gives hope and encouragement to cancer patients by showing that people are supporting them in many ways and helping them fit in.
