Priya Trivedi - Vice President and Markham Community Outreach

As a high school student, I went to the first Locks for Cancer event to support my friends and did not intend to donate my hair. As the event progressed I realized that people of all ages were donating their hair for a such a noble cause and this inspired me to take my first step and donate my hair. This event left me feeling good. During past year, during my volunteering at Markham Stouffville Hospital I have come across so many people suffering with this life-threatening illness. Knowing that something so small as to donating your hair can change someone’s life encouraged me to join the Locks for Cancer Team. This lead me to help coordinate and lead the Markham event for locks for the cancer in the community. Locks for Cancer encourages people within a community to come together and work towards helping families battling with Cancer. By donating your hair, you can put a smile on someone’s face. I believe that we can all give back to the people that have lost so much and inspire each other as we do so. Together we can all join to a difference in the community and make an everlasting change!

Divena Raina - Markham Event Planning

Cancer is the second cause of death around the world, and approximately 1 in 6 deaths arise from cancer. Last year, to show my support to all cancer patients, I participated in an event held at my high school, called Relay for Life. We were asked to get into teams and see which team and/or individual would get the highest amount of donations. Different teams also got to participate in the activities, such as cutting your hair for cancer patients. This experience has allowed me to show my greatest support towards the cancer society. The event also included a father speaking about how his daughter died from cancer, and that to me showed how brave families with cancer are, and that the struggles people face are real. By joining Locks for Cancer, I want to make a difference amongst anyone fighting cancer and bring smiles to their faces while they are going through hard times.

Sowmiya Puspanathan- Markham Marketing

Hi, my name is Sowmiya Puspanathan. I’m a grade 12 student from Bur Oak Secondary School. Locks for cancer is an amazing event that helps create wigs for those batting cancer. Personally I’ve had important family members taken away from me over the years due to cancer. I am apart of this team to help spread awareness, do something in our community that reminds everyone that young people care, and to support the people who continue to battle cancer and the loved ones that support them.

At the age of 11, I lost my grandfather to cancer, and from there on I learned what a detrimental impact it can have on the lives of the victim and their families. After experiencing this first hand, I knew I wanted to join the movement and help fight cancer. Locks for cancer has taught me that something even as small as a few inches of hair being donated can have a huge impact on the lives of those who are suffering from cancer.
I encourage you to join the movement, and together we can be bigger than cancer.

I’ve known people affected by cancer. And the most terrifying part is that you don’t know what to say to them. After all, you’re supposed to be there to console them, to support them, to tell them to hold onto every bit of faith. But in that moment, when they tell you, silence is the only thing in your way. For me, the question I was always itching to ask them was, “How can I help you carry your burdens?” However, after going to last year’s Locks for Cancer event, I realize you don’t have to say a single word to express your support. Donating something as sacred and personal as hair is one of the biggest sacrifices you can make to show you care. By doing this, you look cancer right in eyes and tell it, “Hey, you can’t take this person away. Because I will do everything in my power to empower them.” By joining this years team, I hope to say the same.
